Off-Platform Transactions Policy

All sales of items discovered on BuyHappyThings.com must be completed through the BuyHappyThings.com platform. Sellers may not solicit or accept payment outside of our checkout process for items listed or discovered on our marketplace.

Why This Policy Exists

This policy protects both buyers and sellers:

  • Buyer protections only apply to on-platform transactions. Our Cases Policy and purchase protections cannot cover transactions that occur outside BuyHappyThings.com. Buyers who pay outside the platform have no recourse through us if something goes wrong.
  • Sellers are protected by our payment infrastructure. Payments processed through BuyHappyThings.com are handled by Stripe and PayPal, which provide fraud screening and chargeback handling. Off- platform payments (e.g., Venmo, cash, personal check) offer no such protections.
  • Accurate fees and tax reporting. Our platform fee structure and any applicable tax collection only function correctly when transactions are completed through our checkout.

Prohibited Conduct for Sellers

Sellers may not:

  • Include contact information (email address, phone number, social media handle, external website URL) in listings, photos, or messages for the purpose of directing buyers to purchase outside BuyHappyThings.com.
  • Ask buyers to contact them off-platform before or after a listing is viewed.
  • Offer a lower price in exchange for completing the transaction outside BuyHappyThings.com.
  • Accept payment through methods not supported by BuyHappyThings.com checkout (e.g., Venmo, Zelle, cash, personal check, wire transfer) for items discovered on our platform.
  • Instruct buyers to cancel an on-platform order and repurchase directly outside the platform.

Prohibited Conduct for Buyers

Buyers may not:

  • Request to purchase an item from a BuyHappyThings.com seller outside the platform as a means of avoiding fees or protections.
  • Facilitate off-platform transactions that they know to be in violation of a seller's obligations under this policy.

Permitted Activity

This policy applies to items discovered on BuyHappyThings.com. It does not restrict:

  • Pre-existing business relationships between a buyer and seller that are entirely unrelated to any BuyHappyThings.com listing.
  • General business contact information included in a seller profile for legitimate business purposes (e.g., a shop website link that does not replicate the seller's BuyHappyThings.com inventory).

Consequences

Sellers who violate this policy may have their listings removed, their seller accounts suspended, or their accounts permanently terminated. Repeat violations will be treated more severely. In addition to platform consequences, sellers who facilitate off-platform transactions to evade fees may be held liable for the applicable platform fees.

Reporting Violations

If a seller requests that you complete a transaction outside BuyHappyThings.com, please report it to us at support@buyhappythings.com. Include any relevant message history. We investigate all reports.
